Black Widow Spider

latrodectus variolus

While uncommon, black widows can be found in Southern Ontario.

Females are easily identified by their shiny black body and distinctive red hourglass marking. Their venom can cause significant pain and other symptoms.

Cellar Spider

pholcus phalangioides

Also known as daddy long-leg spiders, these spiders have long, thin legs and a small body.

They build loose, tangled webs in damp, dark places like cellars, basements, and crawl spaces. They are harmless to humans.

Common House Spider

parasteatoda tepidariorum

One of the most common spiders found in Ontario homes.

Brownish or grayish in color, they build tangled webs in undisturbed areas like corners, basements, and sheds. They are generally harmless.

Jumping Spider

family salticidae

Small to medium-sized spiders that are easily recognizable by their large front eyes and their jerky, hopping movements.

They are active hunters with excellent eyesight, allowing them to stalk and pounce on their prey.

Wolf Spider

family lycosidae

Wolf spiders are large, hairy spiders that are active hunters. They don’t build webs to capture prey; instead, they chase and ambush their food.

They are typically brown or gray and have excellent camouflage.

Yellow Garden Spider

argiope aurantia

These large and striking spiders are often found in gardens and fields. They have black and yellow markings on their bodies and build large, orb-shaped webs. They are generally harmless and beneficial, as they help control insect populations.
