Mosquito Life Cycle and Seasonality

Table of Contents

As the premier pest control experts in Windsor and Essex County, we at The Spider Guys know that few things can ruin a beautiful summer evening faster than the persistent buzz and itchy bites of mosquitoes. But to truly protect your property and your family, it’s essential to understand your enemy. Let’s dive into the fascinating, and sometimes frustrating, world of the mosquito life cycle and how it dictates their activity right here in our community.

The Four-Stage Lifecycle: A Breeding Machine

Mosquitoes are masters of adaptation, and their ability to thrive in our region is all thanks to their four-stage life cycle. The entire process, from egg to adult, can be completed in as little as 10 to 18 days under the right conditions. This rapid turnover means that a small problem can quickly become a major infestation.

  • Stage 1: Egg. The cycle begins with a female mosquito laying her eggs. A single female can lay hundreds of eggs every few days after a blood meal. They lay these eggs on or near standing water, which is the absolute key to their survival. Some species lay their eggs in “rafts” directly on the water’s surface, while others lay them in moist soil that will be flooded later. The eggs are incredibly resilient and some can survive for months in dry conditions, just waiting for the next rainfall.
  • Stage 2: Larva. Once the eggs are submerged in water, they hatch into larvae, often called “wigglers” for their distinctive swimming motion. These aquatic creatures live just below the surface, where they feed on microscopic organic matter and breathe through a tube. Without water, the larvae will not survive. This is the stage where we can be most effective in control efforts, as interrupting their development at this point prevents them from ever becoming a biting adult.
  • Stage 3: Pupa. After a week or so, the larvae transform into the pupal stage, or “tumblers.” During this phase, the mosquito doesn’t feed. It’s a resting stage where the metamorphosis from an aquatic creature to a flying insect takes place. Pupae are still in the water and will also die if their water source dries up.
  • Stage 4: Adult. Finally, the adult mosquito emerges from the pupal casing and takes to the air. Male mosquitoes live for only a few days to a couple of weeks and feed on plant nectar. The females, however, are the ones you need to worry about. They live longer, up to a month or more, and require a blood meal to get the nutrients needed to produce eggs. Once she gets her meal, the female lays her eggs, and the whole cycle starts over again.

Mosquito Seasonality in Windsor and Essex County

The seasonality of mosquitoes in our region is a direct result of the weather. As soon as temperatures rise and we see more moisture, the mosquito population explodes.

  • Spring: The Awakening. As the snow melts and the weather warms up, the first mosquitoes begin to emerge. This is when the eggs that have overwintered in the soil finally get the water they need to hatch. It’s also when we start to see the first signs of standing water in backyards—clogged gutters, old tires, and forgotten buckets.
  • Summer: Peak Season. This is prime mosquito season in Windsor. The hot, humid conditions are perfect for their rapid life cycle. High temperatures speed up the development process, meaning new generations of mosquitoes are emerging every few weeks. This is when mosquito activity is at its highest, particularly during dawn and dusk. This is also the time when the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit actively monitors for West Nile Virus, a disease that can be transmitted by mosquitoes.
  • Autumn: Winding Down. As temperatures begin to drop in the fall, mosquito activity decreases. The cooler weather slows down their development, and they become less active. However, don’t let your guard down entirely. Mosquitoes will continue to be a nuisance until the first hard frost.
  • Winter: Overwintering. Once the cold weather hits, adult mosquitoes die off. However, some species, and their eggs, have the ability to go into a state of diapause, a type of hibernation, to survive the winter and re-emerge in the spring, ready to start the cycle all over again.
